Diagnosing Autism - Signs, Symptoms and Treatments

Autism is a bioneurological disorder characterized by a profound lack of social interaction and language skills. Its more common signs are repetitive motions, ritualistic behaviors that have meaning only for the person with autism, and emotional outbursts.Diagnosing autism -- its signs, symptoms, and treatments --becomes possible within the first three years of life.

Is Autism Confusing You? Getting conflicting advice? Not sure what information is reliable?

The first symptoms parents usually notice often become apparent in infancy. The child fails to make spontaneous eye contact or actively avoids it. He does not respond to his name when it’s spoken aloud and reactions to social stimuli are absent. A prime example of this is not mirroring nonverbal cues like returning a smile when someone smiles at him. Many people with autism, but not all, exhibit a “deadpan” expression. Parents may also notice the child not asking verbally for something he wants. Instead he is more likely to point or use gestures to symbolize his wants.

This disconnection from the people around him leads the autistic child to show little interest in them. This, in turn, means he makes no effort to engage them by pointing out things they like or are interested in and doesn’t understand their emotional responses.
The child with autism displays a large amount of rigidity in his reaction to the world around him. He often has a set of rituals he has created in order to deal with his reality. Any deviation from the rituals or change in his environment can send him into a tantrum, a very strong indicator to parents that something is wrong with their child.

Diagnosing autism -- its signs, symptons, and treatments -- is not a simple case of “is-is not.” Symptoms vary widely, so diagnosing autism is often a challenge. The variability makes it necessary to custom-tailor a treatment plan for each patient. Treatments will need to be applied throughout the lifespan of the autistic person, becoming a part of his daily routine.

Occupational and physical therapy are often used in the treatment of autism with good results. Occupation therapy provides training in the activities of daily living like personal grooming and dressing. Physical therapy relaxes tense muscles, allowing the release of pent-up emotions.

Applied behavior analysis deals with the emotional outbursts and rigidity and thus aids in socialization.

Recently, there has been success in nutritional assessment and supplementation in the treatment of autism. The avoidance of casein and some grains, along with dietary supplementation of vitamins A, the B complex, and D show some promise in controlling symptoms.

Autism Social Skills - Tips for Improving Child’s Social Skills

Developing the child’s communication and social skills before the age of two prevents the atrophy of any latent skills he already possesses. Using intensive therapy strategies from an early age alleviates communication problems somewhat, allowing the child to develop near-normal social and communication skill levels.

Best Way to Treat Autism? Need straight-shooting advice? Comprehensive resource available.

There are many ways to teach autism social skills, and tips for improving the child’s social skills are a valuable starting point in the home environment. For example, using pictures to represent what he wants – a toy, his shoes, something he likes to eat – helps connect the external environment to his inner world. The picture represents a concrete object.

A good tip for improving a child’s social skills is teaching him how to understand emotions, perhaps the one of the most important areas. Being able to read and interpret facial expression and body language is one of the basic human social skills. These could be taught through the use of pictures previously mentioned, gradually building on this foundation with appropriate verbal cues.

The next most important tip in improving the child’s social skills would include developing his conversational skills as a follow-on from the more physical aspects just discussed. Awareness of personal space, listening skills, and staying on a particular topic are natural progressions. Being able to recognize a friend and knowing what is a friend is leads into group integrative play, and so forth.

There is one interesting caveat there, though. Children with autism often have the challenge of generalization to overcome when they are learning social and communication skills. This means, in essence, that the child may learn a social skill at home, but may not be able to make the connection between the skill and a different environment. Thus, a very important tip in improving a child’s social skills is to teach him the same skill in different environments, or at least show him that he can tie his shoes in two different situations.

This tip is a key in improving an autistic child’s social skills across the spectrum. By developing his skills in as many different places as possible, or helping him connect different people with different skills and surroundings, he builds significant connected concepts and steps “out of the box” of his mind.

Whatever the concept that is being taught, it should be done during a time of low stress. The child will be able to focus more successfully and will be less likely to have a meltdown over a secondary issue not associated with learning a social skill.

Autism Syndrome or Aspergers Syndrome?

Autism and Aspergers syndrome are referred to as autism spectrum disorders (ASD. Not forms of mental illness, they are disorders with a bioneurological basis. Aspergers syndrome is sometimes called “more advanced autism,” inferring that the Aspergers patient has fewer challenges that the autistic patient. However, there are some very definite differences between the two conditions.

Autism Myths Explained. We break down the complexity of autism and dispel misconceptions.

Autism and Aspergers syndrome both involve problems with mental processes. Children with either disorder tend to be inflexible with regard to daily routine, their likes and dislikes, the way things are done, etc. They share a similar impairment in decoding language and fail to grasp metaphoric speech, taking everything literally.

There are difference between autism and Aspergers syndrome, though. The two conditions appear to have some overlap.

Let’s start with autism. The ritualistic nature of many behaviors, as well as lack of most social interaction, makes the autistic child stand out as being different from quite an early age, usually by the age of three. Autism is regarded as being a lifelong condition, one that requires an intensive regimen of behavioral modification, dietary analysis, and sometimes drug therapy in the form of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication.

Autism’s most striking symptom is an extreme lack of communication and social skills arising from rigid mental thought processes. This rigidity makes learning very difficult for most autistic people in general, but there are variations due to the complex genetics involved with the disorder.

Aspergers syndrome, on the other hand, usually is not as dramatic in its manifestations. Those children with Aspergers syndrome may appear to be merely very shy or slightly odd, lost in their own private little worlds. At the primary-school level, they may have some difficulties making friends, but they do make them. A diagnosis of Aspergers syndrome, therefore, may not be made until the child is quite a bit older and fails to mature socially in the same way as his peers. In essence, the Aspergers child fails to recognize important social cues.

Determining if the child has autism or Aspergers syndrome requires some travel though the gray areas of diagnosis. Aspergers is different from having a “more advanced” variety of autism. Autistic children are nearly lacking in social and communications skills in general. Aspergers children have the social and communication skills, but at an incomplete level.

While very similar in manifestation, a diagnosis of either autism or Aspergers syndrome requires professional assessment.

Autism Diet - Reduce Autism Symptoms Through Diet

Much has been written in the popular press about the dramatic behavioral improvement in children with autism when they are put on a special diet. This diet, devoid of gluten and casein, two major proteins in the Western food supply, is touted as being a power weapon to reduce autism symptoms through diet.

Autism hits every 20 secs. Worried about your autistic child? Get new insights & reliable facts.

Scientific research has turned up conflicting data on the efficacy of the low-gluten, low-casein diet. Autistic children have abnormal intestinal motility and have a rate of nutrient absorption lower than the general population, according to a study done in New York in 2006. The study was conducted using a very small sample of 50 children. New research, using a much larger sample size, is due out shortly from the University of Rochester.
On the other hand, researchers in the United Kingdom and in Massachusetts have not found absorption problems to occur more often in children with autism.

There exist alternate hypotheses as to why the diet appears to work, too. Similarly, much of the research failed to control for the single variable, the diet, during the experimental design phase.

Treating autism on many fronts and with many different strategies muddies the picture further. Is the elimination of certain foods really what caused the improvement in behavior? Or was it the encouragement of regular toileting habits that improved the behavior?

One of the biggest concerns among research nutritionists is the removal of important sources of protein from the diets of growing children. Gluten, actually composed of two separate proteins, glutenin and gliadine, is ubiquitous in the Western diet. Wheat, rye, oats, soy sauce, bread, and many prepared foods contain significant amounts of this protein. Casein, a phosphoroprotein, is the major protein source in milk and dairy products.

Given the rigidity of thought processes and ritualistic behavior of children with autism, there is also concern among dietitians that the children’s finicky appetites could cause them to reject a diet that does not include some favorite childhood foods like yogurt, ice cream, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Switching an average child to a gluten-free, casein-free diet is difficult to initiate and maintain over long periods of time. Doing so with an autistic child would be even more so.

Parents will do just about anything to ensure the safety and well-being of their children. Before they attempt to reduce autism symptoms through diet, a consultation with their usual pediatrician is very advisable.

One Baby Bash Coming Up!!!!

Birthdays are one of the most important events in our lives. This day signifies our arrival in the world and the celebration of it is a commemmoration of that first time we've ever came into the world. Most especially for our precious baby.

Here are some tips to get that baby bash on the roll and be the talk of the baby land for a week or so. One, preparation of the baby bash is extremely important! Create a theme that you would like to follow. Would you like your baby bash to be a sci-fi adventure? Or would you want your baby bash to be a costume party? Or rent even an amusement park complete with the merry-go-round and a clown or two. Whatever you decide, the baby bash needs to be well-thought of to keep it organized as well as the safety of the guests can be assured.

The baby bash depends on the age of the baby. For one year olds, clowns would do so that he or she can facilitate the party since the most important guests would be the little children. Magic shows and puppetry would be sufficient to keep the children interested and satisfied. While for two years old and older, since by this time, they are already mobile and have learned to walk, a costume party or an amusement park theme would be the solution to keep the kids happy. Balloons to keep them preoccupied, cotton candy to keep them busy and lots and lots of kiddie food.

Second, sending out the invites. It seems that babies are conversational pieces. Thus, your network of friends increase since you meet other moms and dads who have babies near your baby's age group. They can become your buddies, swapping babysitting time when you need to unwind and relax. Their kids are your guests in the baby bash and not the parents. Thus, the baby bash must be geared towards the kid's enjoyment.

Third, preparation of the food. Since this is a kiddie party, finger foods should comprise most of your menu. Kids easily tire of food and so small portions must be served at them. If possible, separate the food of the parents with the kids, if the parents were invited.

Sometimes, a baby bash becomes an adult get-together when there are no other babies that could be invited.

Whatever you have decided what the baby bash must be like, keep in mind that the baby's comfort is more important. Sometimes, there are babies who are afraid of clowns. You must have an alternative activity in mind in case this happens.

Fourth, post baby bash activities. After all the food, the favors and trimmings gone, it is time to clean up. The most convenient way to finish all the food left is to ask mothers to take home a portion of the food served. This not only minimizes food spoilage, it would also keep the kids occupied during the drive home, in case they start asking for food. Because there are kids who play all throughout the party and do not pay attention to the food. But once they have settled down, usually during the ride home, then they start to feel hunger pangs. Thus, you would be helping parents keep the kids behaved during the ride home.

Then baby bash need not be a strenuous and nerve-racking activity that moms would rather not plan for. It could also be enjoyable for the parents as well.

Learn How To Get Her Back

If you really think that you and your ex are meant to get back together, then you need to learn how to get her back. Learning how to get her back is not necessarily difficult, but it does take some thinking and some planning if you really do want to get the results you seek.

1 - Though it may seem counterintuitive when rekindling the relationship is what you seek, if you want to learn how to get her back you need to begin by cutting off communication for a while. This is going to be tough, and it may even feel as if it is killing you, but it will be killing her even more. After a little bit of time she will begin to realize how much she really needs you, and how much she desperately misses you. Cutting off communication is one of the biggest and most vital steps in rekindling things with your ex.

2 - Allow yourself to recover emotionally. If you want to learn how to get her back, you need to take the time to become emotionally controlled and calmed down. Women dislike me who are desperate, clingy or needy, so pull your life together and get over those feelings long before you consider trying to draw her back in to your life.

3 - Flirt with someone new. This is another step that may seem counterintuitive in nature, but it is extremely useful if you are trying to learn how to get her back. Start talking to another girl, because it will be too much for your ex to bear. Not only will this benefit you because it will take some of your stress away, but it will also let your ex girlfriend know that you are moving on, which will make her jealous and cause her to realize how much she really wants to be with you.

4 - Behave as if nothing is bothering you. In other words, if you want to learn how to get her back, you need to play it cool. She is not going to want to take you back if you are feeling and behaving depressed. You need to make sure that you are behaving as if you are having a good time, overcoming the break up depression to let her know that everything is okay.

5 - Always look your best. Make sure that you are dressed to kill and look your best all the time. She won't be able to resist you, hands down. Appearance can play a large role in showing your ex that you're moving on and look great. If you look great and take the time to look your best, your ex will notice, and will respond positively.

These are just the beginning steps in winning your Ex back. They are the initial steps I followed when I lost the love of my life. And frankly these aren't my original ideas. I turned to T 'Dub' Jackson when I had no idea of how to get my true love back.

Understanding Anti-Seizure Drugs As Autism Medical Treatment

Autism affects each patient differently than the next, and therefore, each patient is approached differently concerning their treatments and therapies, and if a patient with Autism Disorder is experiencing seizures as well, lifestyle changes accompanied with Anti-seizure drugs could be the answer.

Learn More About Autism. A variety of Autism treatments explained in easy, simple terms.

Anti-seizure drugs may also be prescribed to an Autistic patient to deal with certain behavioral issues as well, such as aggression, mood swings, and/or rages, and recently doctors have found that some anti-seizure medications can help with speech and language development which may be slowed due to Autism Disorder.

The most important information a parent or caregiver to understand is to be sure to administer the medication as directed and on time. Anti-seizure drug treatments usually last for a certain period of time (some up to four years) and basically work by "retraining" the brain to cease seizing.

The way the medicine works all depends on the type of anti-seizure drug one is prescribed. Some of the medications go straight to the problem, and inhibit activity in the grand mal part of the brain where seizures begin, while others are chemically based.

Common side effects across the range of these drugs are headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, and suicidal thoughts. The last of these is obviously the most serious problem, and therefore, parents and caregivers must pay close attention to the mood of their loved one/patient, being sure to keep an eye out for any signs of depression or self-injurious behaviors.

If the patient's seizures or other Autism symptoms are lessened due to the use of anti-seizure drugs, there is no reason to stray away from them, however, be sure to follow all medical directions and to monitor the patient regularly.

How to Get Your Ex Girlfriend Back in Five Steps

If you really want to learn how to get your ex girlfriend back, there are a number of steps that you can follow to have more success than if you just wing it and hope for the best. Breakups happen, but they do not necessarily have to be forever. Here are five steps that will allow you to subtlety let your ex girlfriend know that you're still interested in being a fixture in her life, so that you can potentially rekindle things in the right away.

5 - If you want to learn how to get your ex girlfriend back, start by reaching out and touching her. Playing too hard to get is not the best way to approach this, though communication should be scaled back. Reach out to her and let her know subtlety that you are still interested in being a part of her life.

4 - Drop her an e-mail to keep in touch. If you do not find casual, easy going methods of communication with your ex, you will never be able to get her back. Staying in touch is absolutely vital, but keep it to casual messages like "Hey, what's up?" rather than overwhelming her inbox with love poetry.

3 - If you want to learn how to get your ex girlfriend back, stay away from other girls. Sure, she may be understanding enough to let it slide if you begin to peruse other "prospects", but if you want to get your girlfriend back, stay away from other ladies.

2 - Remember the important things. Part of learning how to get your ex girlfriend back means treating your girl like a princess. One of the easiest ways to do this is to show her that you care by remembering the most important anniversaries and dates in her life. Send her a card on her birthday, and let her know you're thinking about her in a harmless and positive way.

1 - Call and text, but use discretion when reaching out to her. You should not be afraid to send your ex girlfriend a text message, or drop her a line here and there. Uncertainty is something that should be avoided in life and love, so call her up and let her know what's going on so that she knows where you are and what you're doing, and doesn't have to imagine that you're out having fun without her, or with another woman. Let her know you care, and that you still think about her. If she knows she's still in your thoughts so frequently, it will contribute heavily to how quickly she will want to rekindle things with you.

There is no exact process or science to the process of learning how to get your ex girlfriend back, but there are some pretty clear cut suggestions out there that will steer you in the right direction. Obviously maintaining contact and communication is absolutely vital to the rekindling process, but do not over do it, otherwise you may scare her away.

These are just the beginning steps in winning your Ex back. They are the initial steps I followed when I lost the love of my life. And frankly these aren't my original ideas. I turned to T 'Dub' Jackson when I had no idea of how to get my true love back.

Understanding Antipsychotics As Autism Medical Treatments

Both typical and atypical antipsychotics are types of Autism medical treatments prescribed to children with Autism Disorder, especially those who experience repetitive behavioral patterns and/or aggression and self-injurious behaviors.

Autism Spectrum Disorder .Tired of confusing information? Need accurate, reliable facts?

With about 58% of children who are diagnosed with Autism receiving some form of pharmaceutical treatment, antipsychotics are the highest prescribed medicinal treatment, as it is prescribed to about 66% of those taking medication to control Autism symptoms.

The most common atypical antipsychotic medication prescribed as an Autism medical treatment at present is risperidone, primarily because it is the only antipsychotic currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Nevertheless, the FDA only recommended it for children who were exhibiting severe behavioral issues, not for those who only showed signs of occasional mild aggression.

While Antipsychotics do not treat the central symptoms of Autism, such as social and developmental lags, it is unquestionably successful in treating the severe behavioral issues and aggression commonly associated with Autistic children.

Placebo controlled studies have shown that weight gain was the most noticeable side effect, however, it is well established that many patients discontinue antipsychotics as an Autism medical treatment because of the serious long term side effects including seizures and tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia causes body parts to involuntarily spasm and is associated with irreparable central nerve damage. Basically, if one decides to augment other Autism treatments with medication, all other interventions should remain constant and unchanging so that any changes can easily be linked with the medication.

Additionally, because the nervous system of patients with Autism is extremely sensitive, it is important to gradually introduce the antipsychotics at the lowest possible dose at first. The timing of antipsychotic medications is also important for this particular treatment, and therefore, parents and/or caregivers must take care to administer the medication at the same time everyday. Furthermore, in order to gauge the efficacy of the antipsychotic medication, parents and/or caregivers should assess the child (or adult's) symptoms before beginning treatment and keep a log of symptoms before, during, and after use.

Parents and caregivers along with health professionals (who are preferably experienced in working with Autistic patients) must work together to be sure the antipsychotic medication's benefits are outweighing any side effects, and to decide if treatment should be continued and/or supplemented. Be sure to look into all possible side effects of both typical and atypical antipsychotics and ask your health professional whatever questions you may have before beginning this Autism medical treatment.

How to Get My Ex Back When He Has Moved On

Have you lost your boyfriend, and are now asking for help on "how to get my ex back when he's moved on'? Don't bother moping, because what you have lost does not mean you have lost it forever. Here are some quick and simple tips for learning how to get your ex back even if he has moved on to another woman and no longer appears to be interested in associating with you.

1 - The first step to getting the man of your dreams back is finding a way to convince him that he still wants you. Unless he really, really does not want anything to do with you, then there are a number of options that you can employ from this point on.

2 - One of the most advantageous things that you can do is simply to be his friend. Make a really good friend to him, showing him that you understand him and that you can be around him without creating any drama. Show him that you can joke around with him and have a healthy friendship with him. When the drama and stress of the relationship and breakup have subsided, he may realize that he wants you again.

3 - When you communicate with your ex boyfriend, be sweet and kind to him but don't be afraid to have a little bit of attitude. You are going to want him to want you, but you're also going to want to give him the feeling that he cannot have you just yet. While playing games is not the best way to go, you do not want give an air of hard to get, making him more interested in the process.

4 - You should be playing a little bit hard to get, but you also want to make sure that he knows you are available. You shouldn't completely rule out the concept of flirting and hanging out with friends, because drumming up a little bit of jealousy never hurt anyone - But it is important that you play it safe because if he doesn't think you are available, he probably will not find the motivation to pursue you.

5 - Avoid acting desperate at all costs. If you act desperate, your ex boyfriend will under estimate you. You are going to want to play things cool, letting him know that you are okay with everything that has happened, and that you are willing to move on. If you act desperate, things won't work out the way you are intending them to, so avoid doing this at all costs.

6 - Any time that you know he is looking at you, or if you feel like he is looking at you, look at him out of the corner of your eye. This sidelong glance will let him know that you are paying attention to him, but in a mysterious "you can't have me" kind of way.

7 - Casually remind him of some of the best times that you have had together. These good memories will help him to remember how good the two of you used to be together. Don't bring up any bad memories, because it will only hurt his bad side, which will not do you any good.

These are just the beginning steps in winning your Ex back. They are the initial steps I followed when I lost the love of my life. And frankly these aren't my original ideas. I turned to T 'Dub' Jackson when I had no idea of how to get my true love back.

Understanding Antidepressants As Autism Medical Treatments

While there is no cure for Autistic disorder, there are many treatments aimed at reducing specific Autism symptoms. Of the approximately 58% of patients who receive pharmaceuticals for treatment of Autism Disorder, about 32% are prescribed to some type of antidepressant, ranking it as second most prescribed, after antipsychotics.

The Latest News on Autism. Learn the facts. Dispel the myths.Gain a better quality of life.

Concerning the use of antidepressants in the control and/or improvement of Autism symptoms, it is important to note that these types of medications are mostly recommended for teenagers or adults rather than the younger demographic of Autistic patients. While an adult or teenager's brain is fully formed, the brain of a young child is still developing making the risk much greater.

There are exceptions, however, where antidepressants would indeed be prescribed to a younger child, such as a young child who needed antidepressants to prevent severe self-injurious behaviors.

There are many categories of antidepressant medications, but the most commonly used are SSRI's, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Celexa, Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft are all common brand names that are often prescribed to treat depression and anxiety disorders which are both common Autism symptoms.

Most of the antidepressant drugs work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, which in turn, elevates the patient's mood. These drugs are not meant as a "cure" for depression and/or anxiety, however, they are useful in addition to other treatments and therapies.

The most common side effects of antidepressant medications are nausea, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, dry mouth, and changes in sex drive/satisfaction. Despite these side effects, however, it is notable that very few patients end their treatment early due to side effects because of the potential and obvious benefits.

Similar to starting an Autism patient on any new medical treatment, antidepressants should be thoroughly researched and familiarized by parents and/or caregivers before the treatment begins. Parents, caregivers, and doctors should also work together to set a "baseline" of the patient's Autism symptoms before beginning the medication to which they may later compare any improvements in symptoms and decide if the medication has been effective in alleviating certain behaviors or symptoms associated with Autism Disorder.

It is recommended that only one prescription medication be used at a time, however, if one's doctor feels it would be beneficial to take two or more medications concurrently be sure to introduce them on at a time to insure that connections can be easily distinguished of which medication causes which improvements and/or side effects in the patient.

How To Get My Ex back If He Wants More Space

Almost everyone has experienced a powerful relationship in their life, when suddenly everything which seems so perfectly is broken off because your boyfriend wants space. There are a number of different reasons for why a boyfriend may suddenly need space, including family problems, insecurities, or a fear of commitment just to name a few. Here are some tips for answering the age old "how to get my ex back" question if your ex boyfriend needs more space.

- You are not going to want to lose your pride, or to allow him to get the best of you - But clearly you are still in love with him. It may be ideal to play a little bit hard to get at first, in order to show him that yes, it was his loss and not your own.

- If you are feeling like your ex boyfriend still has feelings for you, then it may be ideal for you to strike up a conversation with him. Keep communication to a minimum in order to keep the level of drama to a minimum. Short text messages, brief phone calls and online conversations in passing are all a great way to remind him how much he wants to be a part of your life without overwhelming him with your presence when he may actually want and need space.

- Eventually he will begin to show significant interest in you again if all goes well, and this will give you the chance to truly begin to reminisce with him. Keep in mind that you should focus primarily on all of the good memories associated with your relationship in the past. While rekindling a relationship with your ex boyfriend, you are going to want to stay away from the bad experiences and negative experiences in case they conjure bad feelings and undo your hard work.

- If your boyfriend is not responding to your slow and subtle advances, you need to take it for what it is. Either he just really is not interested in you right now, or he really does just need space and you should give it to him. But if on the other hand he seems to be interested in you more than before, or is slowly warming up to you again, then you should continue gradually advancing on him to rekindle the relationship.

- If your ex boyfriend is giving you the right signals, you can try to open your heart up to him. Let him know how you feel, but avoid looking desperate or needy in the process. If your ex is showing you that he is thinking about rekindling things, then it would be healthy to be open with him. But if his signals are pointing in the other direction, it may be wiser to step back and let things happen more naturally.

These are just the beginning steps in winning your Ex back. They are the initial steps I followed when I lost the love of my life. And frankly these aren't my original ideas. I turned to T 'Dub' Jackson when I had no idea of how to get my true love back.

T 'Dub' authored a simple, down to earth step by step plan called "The Magic Of Making Up". And you know, it worked like magic for us. Now we are more in love than ever.

Stimulants As An Autism Medical Treatment

It is notable that Autism affects each patient differently than the next, and therefore, each patient is approached differently concerning their treatments and therapies. Besides the non-medical interventions, such as music, listening, speech, language, and vision training, medications are also prescribed in certain cases to lesson certain Autism symptoms which are not lessened through the non-medicinal trainings or special diet changes.

Is Autism Confusing You? Getting conflicting advice? Not sure what information is reliable?

One type of medication that is frequently used to control the Autism symptoms of aggressive and violent behaviors, as well as epilepsy, is stimulants, such as the commonly prescribed Ritalin and Adderall.

Out of the approximately 58% of Autistic patients prescribed a pharmaceutical treatment, only around 17% are prescribed stimulants. This low percentage is mainly due to the efficacy of antipsychotics and antidepressants, which also cause less dependability.

The way that stimulants help to control symptoms of Autism Disorder is by increasing focus and decreasing hyperactivity and impulsivity, however, this is not without potential side effects. Prolonged use of stimulants may lead to drug dependence, and therefore should be used only if there is a noticeable improvement in the patient's behavior or intermittently with other therapies.

Other side effects include insomnia, loss of appetite, high blood pressure, and abdominal pain. If a parent or caregiver notices any of these side effects, the health provider should be notified immediately. Other treatments may be prescribed by the health provider instead in order to avoid any invasive symptoms that are affecting the patient's daily life functioning more than necessary.
